Sex, Mitochondria, and Genetic Rescue.
Genetic rescue is a potentially effective management tool to offset the effects of reduced genetic diversity in imperiled populations. However, implementation requires complex choices. Here we address the consequences of introducing males versus females, highlighting the possibility that introduced females might lead to maladapted mitonuclear genomes and reduced offspring fitness.

Weight control diets favorably affect parameters of the metabolic syndrome and delay the onset of diabetic complications. The adaptations occurring in adipose tissue (AT) are likely to have a profound impact on the whole body response as AT is a key target of dietary intervention. Identification of environmental and individual factors controlling AT adaptation is therefore essential. Here, expr...

متن کاملNitric oxide and mitochondria in metabolic syndrome
Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a cluster of metabolic disorders that collectively increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Nitric oxide (NO) plays a crucial role in the pathogeneses of MS components and is involved in different mitochondrial signaling pathways that control respiration and apoptosis. The present review summarizes the recent information regarding the interrelations of mitochondri...

genome. Experiments performed to determine relationships between these parameters in various nutrient media are described and interpreted. After discussing steady states, attention is focused upon the very interesting work on variation of synthesis rates when bacteria are transferred from a minimal to an enriched medium. Measurement of the rates for various classes of macromolecules reveals tha...
